What is Vue.js and why is it gaining popularity amongst JavaScript development frameworks?

The increase in popularity can be seen particularly well when analyzing data from 2018 and 2019 when Vue.js saw incredible growth: 229 percent, which is enormous compared to React (34 percent). With 4.4 million monthly downloads on NPM, Vue.js already occupies a significant portion of the market. In comparison, its popularity on GitHub (190k stars) has surpassed React and Angular by a fair margin.

In this article, we’ll analyze what Vue.js is and what is the reason for its growing popularity.

What Is Vue.js?

Vue.js is a progressive JavaScript framework for building user interfaces and one-page applications. It’s similar to other frameworks like AngularJS and ReactJS in that it uses a component-based architecture. However, Vue.js distinguishes itself from these frameworks by its simplicity and flexibility. Instead of having to manually optimize your code, Vue.js intelligently does it for you as a compiler, so you render fast and stay fast.

One of the benefits of using Vue.js is that it’s easy to learn if you’re already familiar with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. In addition, Vue.js applications are typically very fast and responsive due to their lightweight nature. Vue is considered a child of the JavaScript frameworks Angular and React. Created by Evan You in 2013 (released in 2014), Vue has gained popularity rapidly.

It's worth noting that Vue doesn't have support from big companies like Google (Angular) or Facebook (React). It functions entirely thanks to the open-source developer community.

Why Is Vue.js Gaining Popularity Amongst Web Development Frameworks?

The main reason for Vue's immense popularity is that it combines the best of Angular and React. Learning from the ups and downs of Angular and React, Vue takes care not to repeat any mistakes. It focuses exclusively on the view layer, i.e., building user interfaces.

Vue is easy to learn and has a gentle learning curve. The core library is focused on the view layer only and is very easy to pick up and integrate with other libraries or existing projects. On the other hand, AngularJS (1. x) and React are both full-fledged frameworks with built-in dependency injection, routing, etc., and take days or even weeks to master.

Vue is also much lighter than AngularJS (1. x) or React, so loading times are faster and users can see results more quickly.

Under the hood, Vue.js has a refined reactivity system combined with declarative rendering. This means Vue does a lot of heavy lifting for you. It’s a progressive framework, that’ is why developers can start with the core library and add the piece they need from its interconnected ecosystem, for example:

1. Static Site Generation

2. Starter Site Rendering

3. Build Toolchain

4. Testing Units

5. IDE Support

6. State management

7. Vue Router

Vue.js is designed to parallel with other popular technology like TypeScript, giving the development team flexibility to use Vue how it best fits their project.

Component-based Architecture

Component-based architecture (CBA) is a software development approach that emphasizes the separation of concerns within a system. In CBA, software components are self-contained units that can be independently deployed and composed to form larger systems. This modularity enables CBA to support a wide range of development paradigms, including object-oriented programming, aspect-oriented programming, and service-oriented architecture.

This is yet another great thing about building user interfaces with Vue.js. – it uses a component-based architecture, which allows you to divide your app into smaller, manageable pieces (components) that you can use further to create a more complex structure and think about each piece in isolation.

How Does Reactivity Work In Vue.js?

Reactivity is a programming paradigm that allows for declarative adaptation to change. In brief, reactivity in Vue.js is achieved using watchers' special functions that track changes in data. When a change is detected, the watcher automatically updates the corresponding part of the user interface.

Another way that Vue.js achieves reactivity is through the use of computed properties. These are special functions that can be used to automatically calculate values based on other data in the application.

Vue.js provides various ways to automatically calculate values based on other data in the application, as well as several ways to manually trigger updates to the UI. For example, the ‘this.$forceUpdate();’ function can be used to manually trigger updates. This can be useful if you need to update the component based on an asynchronous event.

Dedicated Storage Solutions For Vue.js

There are many dedicated storage solutions for Vue.js, including both local storage solutions and cloud-based storage solutions.

Local storage solutions:

1. Vuex – plugin that persists your store to local storage.

2. Vue-ls – plugin for work with local storage, session storage and cookie.

Cloud-based storage solutions:

1. Firebase – Google's mobile platform for building apps and services for Android, iOS, and web.

2. AWS Amplify – a JavaScript library for frontend and mobile developers building cloud-enabled applications.

Conclusions

Vue offers a number of ways to use effects and has extensive user manuals. It has a broad environment with great tools such as Vue Router for single-page applications and Vuex for state management. This framework has a simple design, which makes the learning curve of Vue easy, and users can track and fix coding errors more easily.
